As a budding musician myself, I constantly look for ways to make myself known and increase my visibility. I aspire to make it big in the music industry one day and I constantly look for ways to make myself known in order to increase my chances of potentially becoming a professional singer. I have done a lot of research and put a lot of thought into the steps that can be taken in order to increase your visibility and market your music. One of the effective ways to do so in today's context is to use social media to market your music.
Achieving great visibility and marketing your music through social media is not an easy process and it requires you to put in a lot of time and effort into doing so. However, if you are a motivated and are a budding musician, looking to make it big in the music industry, here are the top 10 steps you must follow in order to increase your visibility and market your music through social media:
1. Create music pages on several social media platforms

This is probably the most basic step that every budding musician needs to take in their journey towards achieving increased visibility. It is important for you to create a YouTube Channel, a music page on Instagram and on Facebook. However, you can choose to have either one or all of three of the pages based on your followers and the people you are trying to reach. These pages act as platforms that will enable you to share your musical content with people and this will enable you to gain recognition for your work.
2. Encourage people you know to like, share and subscribe/follow
It is very important that you spread the word about your music pages to your friends, family, Facebook friends, Instagram followers etc. and encourage them to not only "like" your content but also to follow/subscribe to your channels so they get notified each time you post new content and most importantly to share your pages with people they know in order to create awareness amongst a bigger audience.
3. Post good quality content
As a solo musician or as a band, it is very important that you only create and generate good quality content and videos of you or your band performing. Viewers like us, prefer watching high quality content and producing anything that is not up to the mark might discourage viewers from keeping track of your future work or from "following" and supporting your channel for example.
4. Be consistent

As a budding musician it is crucial that you post your content on your various channels in a consistent manner. People expect consistency and it also gives you an added advantage that if you pick a time of the day/week when you regularly post content, your followers would know about it and would expect a video from you at that time of the day/week. This becomes a way of building a loyal fan base.
5. Don't post too often
Though it is important to be consistent, it is also very important to keep in mind the fact that overdoing it or posting too often can annoy your followers/subscribers and hence it is important for you to limit yourself to a limited number of posts per week.
6. Make covers of famous songs
To begin with, it is always a good idea to make covers and videos of yourself performing a famous or a well known song as this acts as a basis of giving people a chance to hear your voice/talent. At the same time it is a song they know and hence it increases the chances of them actually watching, "liking" and sharing your video with other people, given that the quality of the content is good.
7. Tag artists and use relevant hashtags

Tagging artists especially on your Instagram and Facebook posts can be helpful since it notifies them and if your content is good and manages to catch their attention, it might help you in building contacts with the relevant people and potentially building a career in music. Also using relevant hashtags with a fairly high number of users/followers is very important since that helps in bringing your video to the attention of many people (from outside your network) and this ultimately helps in increasing your visibility and in marketing your music.
8. Know your target/end goal
As a budding musician it is important for you to clearly identify your end goal and the main reason you are trying to market music and gain increased visibility. Once you do that, it will enable you to figure out the right people you want to send your videos to or the right people you want to become visible to. For example, you might want to send your videos to a music producer in particular to get a potential offer to sing in a movie or you may just want to become social media famous and try to be seen by as many people as possible. Hence, it is important to identify your main goal which will enable you to use the required strategy.
9. Create and generate original content
Apart from making covers of famous songs/songs that already exist, it is important for you to create original, that is, content of your own to showcase your talents to the full potential. This will become your unique selling point and will become a way to attract new followers to your pages.
10. Engagement with your audience

It is important that you respond to messages and comments from your audience, be open to criticism and engage with your audience in any which way possible. This makes them feel good and valued and hence this will become a factor that will increase your likability amongst fans and help in getting more and more loyal fans.
Like mentioned earlier, following all these steps thoroughly is not easy but, if you manage to do so, it will definitely lead you to the path of success in your musical career.
